Designing Star Wars: The Force Awakens – with James Clyne & Iain McCaig

 

In a galaxy far, far away, ILM Art Director James Clyne and Episode VII Concept Artist Iain McCaigresponded to a call to arms sent out to artists across the realms. At Gnomon, on May 14th, 4:00 PM PDT, Clyne and McCaig will chronicle their inspired journeys, giving a rare look into the uncharted challenges of re-awakening The Force.

Discover the art, architecture, film, and pop culture influences that contributed to the designs of Star Wars: Episode VII. Plus, learn the importance of creating a narrative in concept design, and enjoy insights into Clyne and McCaig’s tried-and-tested workflows. See how Clyne’s set designs translated to set constructions on stage, and ultimately discover what the experience of working on one of the most beloved franchises in movie history is like for artists. Attendees will also have a unique opportunity to explore the personal sketchbook that Iain McCaig kept during the many, many meetings of The Force Awakens.

The event is free and open to the public, and will not be Livestreamed. RSVP today. Seating is on a first-come-first-served basis. Following the event will be the opening of the Gnomon Gallery Show, Episode VII: The Art of James Clyne & Iain McCaig, where complimentary refreshments will be available.

James Clyne

Clyne has been working as an artist in the film industry for over a decade. He’s collaborated on well over 30 film projects, with highlights including various projects working with Steven Spielberg. He has also worked with James Cameron on Avatar andBattle Angel, with J.J. Abrams on both Star Trek movies, with Robert Zemeckis, plus projects with Michael Bay, Darren Aronofsky, and Terry Gilliam. In 2013, he joined the ILM Art Department to work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

McCaig divides his energies between a lifelong love of storytelling, and a passionate belief that everyone in the world can learn to draw. He is best known for his cover art for Jethro Tull’s Broadsword and the Beast, and his Star Wars designs for Queen Amidala and Darth Maul. He recently contributed designs for John Favreau’s live-action The Jungle Book, and J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In 2014, he received the Spectrum Fantastic Art Grand Master Award.
